Renfe in Spain:
Train travel from and to Seville

Seville is located in the southwest of Spain. Train travel to and from the city is very easy and comfortable. In fact, Seville is very well linked to other parts of Andalusia and other regions of Spain. It only has one central station, Santa Justa, making it easier to organize your trip.

Intercity (Cercanias)

Renfe offers an intercity transport service called Cercanias. It links a few stations within Seville, the suburbs and a group of surrounding towns as well. The network has more than 111 km (69 mi) and covers 22 stations.

There are 3 lines: C-1 (Lora del Rio - Utrera), C-3 (Santa Justa - Cazalla Constantina) and C-4 (Circular). The lines C-2 and C-5 are under construction.

These local routes are particularly useful because you avoid traffic jams, the trains are always on time and the fares are very cheap. All of them stop at Santa Justa train station.

Moderate Speed (Media Distancia Renfe)

Seville has train connections with the main Andalusian cities (Cordoba, Malaga, Huelva, Cadiz, Jaen, Granada and Almeria) as well as many other stops along these routes. Please see Renfe's Moderate Speed Map of Andalucia for more detail. (Right-click on the link to download this PDF file)

Although in Spain train travel is very easy thanks to Renfe's wide network, Moderate Speed trains has two disadvantages. Firstly, the fares are not very cheap and secondly, the trains are not very reliable. Actually, they are frequently delayed and the journeys are very long (I would even say that depending on the distance they can be endless...).

It is much better to catch a regional bus. The prices are much cheaper for what you get, the buses are generally very comfortable and modern and they are rarely late.

Long Distance (Largo Recorrido)

Seville has several long distance routes, most of them using AVE (Alta Velocidad Española) trains. These are high speed trains reaching more than 250 km/h (155 mi/h) allowing you to get to your destination very fast. Unfortunately, AVE tickets are in general quite expensive. However some cheap train travel tricks will help you save some money.

Currently Renfe has two AVE routes from Seville:

• Seville - Madrid covering the 525 km (326 mi) in approximately 2h30. It has 20 daily trains departing from 6am to 11pm every hour or so. The trains can also stop at Cordoba, Puertollano and Ciudad Real but not all trains stop at every station. In fact, there's even a nonstop train from Seville to Madrid and vice versa.
• Seville - Barcelona where you travel 1,046 km (650 mi) in 5h30 more or less. There is one train departing in the morning and another one in the afternoon. The early one stops at Cordoba, Zaragoza, Lerida and Tarragona. The latter one stops at Cordoba, Puertollano, Ciudad Real, Zaragoza, Lerida and Tarragona. Please note that these trains do NOT stop in Madrid.
