Are you considering cheap travel? Spain is a very good option if you are coming to Europe. If you plan travelling by car, here are some tricks that will help save a lot of money when travelling.
If you want to travel around Spain on a low budget the best option is to share a car. Very often lots of people come all the way down here from Northern Europe and are looking for passengers to share the fuel costs and the driving hours. Or they rent a car and want to lower the cost.
Have a look at the notice boards in hostels and popular backpacking places (e.g. internet cafes). People sometimes leave messages there indicating the departure date, destination and number of free spaces in the vehicle. If not, try to put up your own message explaining when and where you want to travel.
There are also popular websites like Roadsharing or Viajamosjuntos (in Spanish) that offer a virtual service, linking both drivers and passengers. Try them as well.
Depending on the regions (Catalonia, Basque Country), most of the highways will be toll roads. Try to use the autovias instead. Those are also main roads with 2 lanes but no toll. There will be more traffic and trucks but your trip will definitely be cheaper.
If you intend to hire a car in Spain, always look for the best deals and try to rent a small car. Small is a synonym of cheap. Avoid vans and SUVs. And don't forget to pick a diesel car, you'll notice a big difference every time you fill the tank.
Before renting the car, have a look at the extras (e.g. you'll be charged if the car has a GPS). Read the insurance contract thoroughly and check the basic insurance conditions first before the company starts including other drivers, etc. Finally, make sure the mileage is unlimited. If you exceed it, they'll charge you for every extra km/mi.
Finally, read more about driving in Spain and don't forget to check whether you need an international driver's licence!
